The political blog in the New York Times, called "The Caucus," doesn't speculate about John McCain's choice for a running mate.
It points out that McCain told Don Imus yesterday that he has "started this process of getting together a list of names and having them looked at," and the blog recites some of those names.
But it states no preferences and makes no recommendations.
It leaves it to the readers to post their thoughts on who the choice should be. And many of them have chosen to do precisely that.
Read it for yourself. The choices provide an intriguing insight into the perceptions of the race by observers (many of whom, presumably, are Republicans).

I like Dr. Rice for several reasons. She'd be a good vice-president. And she could gain some support for the ticket among women and African-American voters.
Ironically, McCain has the largest demographic range of choices for a running mate. If Hillary wins the nomination somehow, I'm certain she will have an unspoken rule against choosing any female as her running mate. Likewise, Obama will rule out another African-American on his ticket. McCain has no similar self-imposed restrictions.
